Etta James died on Friday (January 20) at the age of 73 after a lengthy battle with leukemia. The singer is being remembered by Beyoncé, who has quite the history with her.

“This is a huge loss. Etta James was one of the greatest vocalists of our time. I am so fortunate to have met such a queen,” Beyoncé wrote on her blog. “Her musical contributions will last a lifetime. Playing Etta James taught me so much about myself, and singing her music inspired me to be a stronger artist. When she effortlessly opened her mouth, you could hear her pain and triumph. Her deeply emotional way of delivering a song told her story with no filter. She was fearless, and had guts. She will be missed.”

B famously portrayed the blond jazz singer in the 2008 biopic “Cadillac Records.” Her version of “At Last” from the film’s soundtrack would later win a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance.

Beyoncé’s version of James’ iconic ballad once-again made headlines when she performed the track at President Obama’s inaugural ball in 2009. The performance was initially met with some criticism from the always-outspoken James, but she later came around.

Beyoncé is the latest in a long line of celebrities paying tribute to James. “Showing respect, appreciation and love for all the wonderful music and joy #ettajames brought to the world…#ettajamesforever,” Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am wrote on Twitter.

Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams recalled how James’ music influenced her. “#EttaJames, I will be forever grateful for your voice and your soul. Rest in peace.” Rapper Flo Rida — whose latest hit, “Good Feeling,” samples James’ “Something’s Got a Hold on Me” — wrote, “I’m deeply saddened by the passing of the Great Etta James and I will be forever grateful for the gift she Blessed me with.”

It's been two years since 'Cris dropped his last album, <i>Battle of the Sexes,</i> and the Atlanta MC estimates that his next one will hit stores this spring. "I get the beats together and I put out my ideas, so I'd say we're maybe about 40 percent done," the rapper told <a href="http://www.billboard.com/column/the-juice/ludacris-eyes-spring-ludaversal-release-1005831952.story#/column/the-juice/ludacris-eyes-spring-ludaversal-release-1005831952.story" target="_blank"><i>Billboard</i></a> of his upcoming eighth LP, <i>Ludaversal,</i> which he anticipates will be out around May with a first single dropping in March. Luda, who dropped his <a href="/news/articles/1674369/ludacris-1.21-gigawatts-mixtape.jhtml"><i>1.21 Gigawatts</i> mixtape</a> in November, also revealed one big-time guest on the LP. As far as what the two have cooked up for <i>Ludaversal,</i> fans will just have to wait and see. Throughout his career, Luda has shown a ton of versatility. An undeniable hitmaker, at times the nimble-tongued lyricist has been comical (2001's "Area Codes" and 2004's "Number One Spot") and in other instances delivered healthy amounts of substance (2006's "Runaway Love" and 2008's "Do the Right Thing"). For <i>Ludaversal,</i> he will get a little personal. "It's been a minute since I've been away from music, and there is just so much to talk about," he said. <P>PETA's youth division, peta2, is giving props to celebs like <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/kesha_/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a> and "Glee" star Lea Michele at this year's <a href="http://features.peta2.com/libby-awards-2011/?utm_campaign=1211%20Libbys%20Nominees%20Press%20Pitches&utm_source=peta2%20Pitch&utm_medium=Media#PeopleAndMusic" target="_blank">Libby Awards</a> for their efforts in support of animal rights. The Biebs, who appeared in a <a href="/news/articles/1656302/justin-bieber-peta-ad.jhtml">campaign</a> for the organization at the top of the year using Bieber-fied catch-phrases like "My world includes passion for animals, yours should too" and "Animals can make u smile. Adopt from your local shelter," is taking on fellow animal-loving pop star Ke$ha and rappers k-os and Waka Flocka Flame in the Most Animal-Friendly Pop/Hip-Hop Artist category. Ke$ha appeared in an ad campaigning against the slaughter of Canadian seals. Michele, who speaks out against the mistreatment of carriage horses in New York City, faces off against "Jackass" star Steve-O, Cobra Starship's leading man and peta2's Sexiest Vegetarian Gabe Saporta, and "Victorious" star Daniella Monet in the Top Animal-Friendly Celebrity category. The Ready Set, Tokio Hotel, Hellogoodbye and the Swellers are all up for Most Animal-Friendly Band. Ke$ha and Tokio are also up for Best peta2 ad along with Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness and Yelle. The Libby (as in "Liberation") Awards will be decided on January 17 by fan votes as well as peta2. Voting ends December 23. "Our nominees have all worked hard to shine their spotlights on a variety of important animal issues," peta2 Division Manager Marta Holmberg said about the nominees, which honors animal-friendly people and products. "As our accomplished stars demonstrate, compassion isn't just a virtue &#8212; it's also a road to success."</p>

It’s been a rather interesting couple of weeks for Lana Del Rey, beginning with the rather robust online debate over her “Saturday Night Live” performance, and then the subsequent fallout following that performance, in which everyone from “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams to comedian Whitney Cummings weighed in, voicing both derision and support for the singer.

Not surprisingly, Del Rey would prefer to put the matter behind her and focus instead on her upcoming major-label debut, Born to Die (due January 31). As she told MTV News, the album represents her attempt to “re-create myself in song form,” a majestic, maudlin collection of dramatic torch songs that recalls everything from Thomas Newman’s “American Beauty” score to “[Bruce] Springsteen’s summertime sadness.”

“Sonically, I always knew exactly what I wanted,” Del Rey said. “That’s really the only thing I do know. The rest of it was sort of up in the air. I’ve been a writer for a really long time, and a sort of bad composer, but a composer nonetheless. It was something I did alone for some time and then became a collaborative effort as I met better and better people.”

Those people include Brit Justin Parker, who composed much of the music on the album, Philadelphia legend Larry Gold, who’s arranged strings for the likes of Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake, and producer Emile Haynie, best known for tracks by Kanye West and Eminem. Del Rey calls them “her crew,” and they helped shape her ideas into an album that mixes both the light with the dark, the sadness with the sweetness.

“Justin started lacing the tracks with melancholic chords, brought out the bittersweetness that I wanted, and Emile kind of kept it really dark and f—ed up with his heavy beats, and Larry kept it soaring and gorgeous with his strings,” Del Rey explained. “Everyone knew the direction I was going in, and it was very much a collaborative effort.”

And of course, though she’s been suffering the slings and arrows of her critics following her “SNL” performance, Del Rey is most definitely planning on spending the next few weeks promoting Born to Die with a spate of TV appearances. And she’s also making plans for a full-blown tour tentatively scheduled for October — one that she’s already making special arrangements for. And given the past few weeks, perhaps that’s a good idea.

“I’m capping every venue at 900 [capacity], because I don’t want to perform for more [people] than that,” she said. “So what I want to do is do three nights in New York, at like Irving Plaza, and then three nights at the El Rey in L.A., and then, in between, do 15 cities, and cap it at 900 venues. And everybody [at her label, Interscope] is onboard, so that’s what we’re going to do.”

Mother Kris Jenner’s demands for editorial control reportedly kill family’s deal with American Media Inc.

Is the Kardashian brand in a deep dekline? It seems that several of the family’s in-the-works projects are no longer in the works.

The New York Post is reporting that Kris Jenner’s demands have killed a deal that would have seen publishers American Media Inc., the company behind The National Enquirer and Star, creating a Kardashian-themed magazine.

Sources say that mama Jenner tried to play hardball with the publishers, demanding that she get full editorial approval when it comes to Kardashian-related content in any and all of the magazines the company publishes.

“AMI chief David Pecker made it clear that there was no way he was going to tell his editors what stories they could and couldn’t do,” a source explained, adding that the company “balked” at her stipulation. Perhaps in response, Star magazine recently published a cover story claiming that the late Robert Kardashian is not Khloe’s biological father.

Speaking to MTV News, a source close to the negotiations took no issue with the accuracy of the story, hinting that the deal is indeed dead in the water. A rep for the family told the Post, “Kris has never had a conversation with AMI regarding this issue [of her demands]. But the allegations contained in the Star article about Khloe not being a Kardashian are completely fabricated, false and untrue. Robert Kardashian is absolutely her biological father, so of course she was upset over their story.”

It’s not the only blow the Kardashian brand is being dealt. According to previous reports, the ladies had been in talks with Mattel to work on their own Kardashian-themed Barbie dolls. It seems, however, that those plans have also been shelved.

A rep for Mattel told MTV News, “As popular as the Kardashian sisters are, at this point in time we are not manufacturing Barbie-branded Kardashian dolls.”

This is hardly the first time the show has paid homage to Jackson. Back in 2010, the <a href="/news/articles/1657395/glee-thriller.jhtml">New Directions performed his track "Thriller,"</a> complete with zombie garb, during an episode that aired after the Super Bowl. The show has also previously covered "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" and "Man in the Mirror." Back in 2010, the cast of the hit Fox show had only imagined what it would be like to have an entire <a href="http://hollywoodcrush.mtv.com/2010/08/09/glee-michael-jackson/">episode dedicated to Jackson</a>. "I would love to do a Michael Jackson episode," Amber Riley told MTV News at the time. "You know, it's so many [songs that I love], but my favorite song by him is 'Human Nature.' I love that song." While Riley seemed psyched about the opportunity, castmate Jenna Ushkowitz found the possibility a little more daunting. "That's a scary, scary episode to do," she said. <P><b>UNIVERSAL CITY, California</b> &#8212; Hard rock, heavy metal, hardcore and punk have long gone hand-in-hand with evil wizards, magic, vampires and werewolves. And with a collective sub-cultural pedigree that includes stints in the Germs, No Use for a Name, Sunny Day Real Estate, Scream and some band called Nirvana, you'd think the <a href="/music/artist/foo_fighters/artist.jhtml">Foo Fighters</a> &#8212; set to perform at Sunday's <a href="http://www.mtv.com/ontv/movieawards/2011/">Movie Awards</a> &#8212; would know their "Potter" from their Zeppelin. Certainly they can recognize a "wand" reference and pinpoint its origin? </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:660301.id:1664959" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Right? Before we put MTV News' magically crafted trivia to the band, it seemed safe to assume the Foos would accurately distinguish between the words of Harry Potter, a "Twilight" character and Led Zeppelin. But was their underground nerd cred blown to shreds? They join already announced acts Lady Gaga, Ludacris, Lupe Fiasco, Sugarland and Jason Aldean. Country crossover act the Band Perry will perform a full concert of their own after the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys">Grammy</a> nominations concert wraps up at L.A. Live's Nokia Theatre. LL Cool J will again host the show, which will air at 10 p.m. on CBS, <a href="http://www.billboard.com/news/rihanna-band-perry-usher-added-to-grammy-1005529002.story#/news/rihanna-band-perry-usher-added-to-grammy-1005529002.story" target="_blank">Billboard.com reports</a>. This marks the fourth year the Recording Academy had held one of these concerts. As some of music's biggest names take the stage during the special, the nominations for major Grammy categories will be announced. The awards ceremony will go down February 12 at the Staples Center, and will air live at 8 p.m. Over the course of her career, Rihanna has taken home four Grammy Awards including Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for "Umbrella," two trophies for "Run This Town" (including Best Rap Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration) and Best Dance Recording for "Only Girl (In the World)." We've never actually met, though I did say hello to your dad at that <a href="/news/articles/1620444/jay-z-hopes-grizzly-bear-will-push-hip-hop.jhtml">Grizzly Bear show</a> a couple years ago (he kind of nodded back to me), and one time I was in the same room as your mom, so I feel like I'm in a pretty good position to be speaking directly to you right now. Anyway, you are just a few days old and, as such, probably not all that familiar with the way things work, but I figured I'd let you in on a little secret: You are very famous, and you are probably always going to be. Shoot, you've already <a href="/news/articles/1676945/blue-ivy-carter-new-jay-z-song-glory.jhtml">landed your first feature</a>, and it's better than anything Lourdes Leon has ever done. You are the First Daughter of Hip Hop, not to mention the <i>actual</i> Destiny's Child. And given all that, you childhood is going to be a little unorthodox: You will undoubtedly be the subject of creepy fashion spreads in gossip mags (just ask <a href="http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-moms/news/suri-cruise-wears-red-lipstick-pink-bowler-hat-2011109" target="_blank">Suri</a>) and you will definitely never get to go to a Chuck E. Cheese or anything. Sorry in advance. But honestly, Chuck E. Cheese isn't that great anyway. You will get to go to any preschool your little heart desires, you can have anything you want for lunch and you could probably play point guard for the Nets once Deron Williams leaves. I can't even begin to imagine what your first birthday party will be like, but I hope I'm invited to it. You will be afforded the kinds of opportunities we mere mortals can only dream of; yours will be a life unlike most. It goes hand-in-hand with being a celebrity at age zero &#8212; sure, you'll probably be assigned a security detail as soon as you're able to walk, but, really, it's a small price to pay for the unlimited possibilities of fame. But here's the thing: I hope you never actually <i>act</i> like you're famous. You are, despite all evidence to the contrary, just another human being. No more, no less. As you get older, try to follow <a href="http://www.bestweekever.tv/2012-01-03/louis-ck-autograph-advice/" target="_blank">Louis C.K.'s advice</a>: Don't be an a–hole. A lot of this will be up to your parents, which is a good thing, since they seem to be two of the more grounded folks on the planet, despite being multimillionaires who own part of an NBA franchise. They certainly know the value of hard work (maybe don't ask your dad about said "hard work" in his early days, though), and neither of them has ever forgotten where they came from. Which is why you should probably listen to them, no matter what &#8212; even if they refuse to let you rent out Priv&#233; for your first ballet recital. Trust me, it's for your own good. Because, really, I hope you grow up to be your own person, that you follow your own muse and be happy and well-adjusted. You don't even have to be a celebrity; you could be a teacher or a scientist or a social worker. In fact, maybe you should &#8212; they're all more honorable professions. But if you want to follow in your parents' footsteps, that's fine too; I just hope that when I'm 50 and interview you on some red carpet, I will be relieved to discover that you are a very nice person. I have a feeling you probably will be. You have good role models in that regard. Oh, and please tell your mom and dad congratulations for me. So good luck with your life. It's going to be a wild, wonderful thing. I look forward to seeing how you turn out, and I get the feeling I'm not the only one. I know you've got a busy sleeping/eating schedule ahead of you, so I'll let you get back to it. The upcoming World War II drama “Red Tails” tells many stories. First and foremost, it’s the story of the heroic Tuskegee Airmen, the country’s first African American air regimen. Within that story are tales of social injustice and a historical wartime drama. It’s also a big-budget action movie produced by George Lucas.

With so much to accomplish, “Red Tails” has a lot on its plate dramatically speaking. One of the stars of the film, Cuba Gooding Jr., told MTV News recently that the film manages to find the right balance.

“I think it strikes it in the subject matter,” Gooding said. “It didn’t hurt that George Lucas spent the last quarter of a decade trying to get this story onto the big screen.

“The fact that you have the story of these warriors, whose story has been suppressed up until this date — except for smaller instances — are finally getting their due, educating the audience of what African Americans did in the war effort in World War II … told by George Lucas, ‘Star Wars,’ ” Gooding said. “You’re going to see an amusement park ride.”

Gooding concluded that all of those elements came together for a proper telling of the story. “I think that’s how you get the balance,” he added. “You get a filmmaker who is so passionate he’s putting his own dough up to the tune of $100 million-plus. You see it on the screen.”

Gooding’s co-star, Nate Parker, tried to chime in with a comment of his own, but the Academy Award-winning actor stopped Parker jokingly. “No, no, no, no. That was enough,” Gooding said. “I’m just kidding. Speak your mind, brother.”

For Parker, the answer to the film’s success is simple. “Risk and reward,” he said. “He took a risk, and now I think he’s being rewarded in a major way because I think the film is fantastic.”

There was a lot of pressure on the cast of the upcoming true-life World War II drama, “Red Tails.” Not only did they have to honor the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American air regimen in the U.S., but they also had to appease the actual airmen who worked as consultants on the film.

MTV News sat down with Tristan Wilds, Elijah Kelley and Ne-Yo to discuss the relationship between the actors and the real-life historical figures.

Wilds explained that having some of the real Tuskegee Airmen on the set of “Red Tails” made things both easier and harder. With the added pressure came a real sense of insurance.

“It’s hard. It definitely is pressure because you’re holding the historical importance of these guys basically in your hands while you’re creating this film,” Wilds said. “But I think having them on set and being there with us and helping us with everything, it kind of made everything so much easier.”

Kelley summarized the airmen’s dual role on the film, saying, “they were there to validate and chastise our decisions at the same time.”

Ne-Yo learned the hard way that when you want to portray real-life figures, you’re responsible to them for even the smallest of details. “A few of the existing Tuskegee Airmen were on set making sure that everything was as genuine and authentic as possible to the point where they would grab you and shake you and straighten your tie and pull your pants up and pull your belt,” Ne-Yo said. “They would go that far, and you basically just had to take it.”

All the men agreed that when it came to taking orders from the real deal, you had little choice but to accept their tips. “An 80-plus-year-old man grabs you and fixes your belt, you might just want to let him do it,” Ne-Yo said.

Raymond</i>. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:717257" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "I saw Usher a few times, but I spoke to him at length at David [Guetta]'s house when we were in Ibiza [Spain]," he told MTV News in L.A. after his Jingle Ball set. "He has very specific ideas of where he wants to go musically and sound-wise." Given that Usher has never shied away from exposing a bit of himself in his music, while also keeping the party going, Cruz wants to make sure they can connect the mind, body and soul for this next release. "He always wants there to be the soul in there," he explained. "I'm kind of, not the opposite, but I'm always like, 'Let's get straight to the point and be really clear with the message and be simple.' "So we try to match those two worlds together: being soulful and, at the same time, catchy," he added. Cruz can't yet discuss what they're working on: Besides "Without You," he said, "Everything else is secret." Usher said he was drawn to the <a href="/news/articles/1674782/usher-david-guetta-without-you.jhtml">Guetta hit</a> because he connected to it emotionally, explaining to MTV News recently what an important part that plays in his musical philosophy. "I think the world wanted a record like that. That [song] really spoke to the journey that I've actually been on in the last three years," he said. "Traveling all around the world, music sounds different. ‘Justin killed it,’ Twist tells MTV News of ‘Wherever You Are.’

The Young Money rap rookie was supposed to see his debut album <i>Don't Get It Twisted</i> drop in 2011, but after a few false starts, the Dallas MC is looking forward to a March 20 release. <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:724182/cp~vid%3D724182%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A724182" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center> Already, he has dropped a ton of singles and high-powered collaborations with Lil Wayne, Busta Rhymes and 2 Chainz.
